Nottingham City Council recently contracted Miles Macadam to resurface 21 bus stops across the city. Nottingham City has one of the largest bus fleet and associated infrastructure in the UK and this puts enormous pressure on their Highway network. Nottingham is also one of the UK’s leading users of electric buses and claims to have the world’s largest fleet of biogas double-decker buses. Approximately 150 buses an hour utilise the bus stops across the city, and the Council need a heavy-duty surfacing material to resist the rutting and deformation prevalent with conventional materials. Over the past 5 years, the Council have used Hardipave™ to improve longevity and durability of the surfacing products. Nottingham City Council are also aiming to become the UK’s first carbon neutral city by 2028. Miles Macadam were able to aid Nottingham City Council in their commitment to reduce their carbon emissions, by being Carbon Neutral and bringing no indirect emissions to the project, thereby helping to lessen the annual Council volume. The scheme took 8 days to complete in a rolling programme in busy, awkward sites. As the works were located in the heart of the City, it was only possible to have partial closures in place for the duration of the scheme, in order to keep disruption to a minimum.
