In late 2020, Miles Macadam were awarded works on Phase 1 of a Town Centre Redevelopment as part of Shrewsbury’s £1.2m Integrated Transport Package designed to improve pedestrian and public realm facilities. During April 2021, we completed Phase 2 of the same scheme. Phase 1 consisted of the resurfacing of Pride Hill, a historically significant pedestrian area. Phase 2 involved the resurfacing of 3 junctions, also in the town centre.
McPhillips were the main contractor and undertook all civils, kerb, pavements and surfacing of standard materials on behalf of Shropshire County Council. To ease the disruption to the public and nearby shops, most of the works were completed during the national lockdown to coincide with the closure of non-essential shops and hospitality venues.
Miles Macadam were specified to install 861m2 of 40mm Hardipave™ surface course in yellow to delineate four locations throughout the Town Centre. Hardipave™ is a BBA / HAPAS certificated Grouted Macadam surface course which has been designed to withstand concentrated traffic volume and loadings and fuel / leachate contamination.
The scheme was completed in four days over the two phases. Due to the location of the works, the carriageways were closed to traffic with pedestrian barriers during the works and curing. The Hardipave™ was left to cure for 24 hours before being reopened to the public. A major benefit of this flagship product is a short curing period, allowing fast track installation and re-opening of the surface for industrial and public use with minimal inconvenience.
