Last month, Highways Magazine hosted their annual Highways Awards in London. Miles Macadam, along with Cardiff Council and SteelPhalt were selected as finalists for their Environmental and Sustainability Award. This award was based on the Cardiff Carbon Neutral Milepave™ Scheme which saw 12,780m² of 50mm Milepave™ surfacing installed on Northern Avenue in Cardiff. The scheme utilised 1,685 tonnes of steel slag aggregate resulting in a saving of 33% carbon compared to a Milepave™ scheme utilising virgin aggregate. Overall, the use of this recycled material created another significant reduction in the carbon footprint (over 50% to that of a conventional hot mix surfacing process, utilising natural aggregate or 42% against a warm mix material). Also, 1,510 tonnes of road planings were returned to the plant and recycled into coated materials for other uses. Despite just missing out on the win, it is such an honour to have our efforts towards carbon reduction recognised in front of some of the industry leaders. This scheme had the highest carbon saving of any reduced carbon surfacing we have ever completed, making it a win for us either way. Following the success of this scheme, interest in utilising Milepave™ and steel slag aggregate has increased, and we hope to be replicating the blueprint of this scheme for several Local Authorities across the UK and help facilitate their carbon targets.
