Shropshire Alliance Tree Planting
The Shropshire Alliance spent Friday morning planting over 200 trees in Habberley, Shropshire. This was the final step in UK’s First Local Authority Carbon Neutral Maintenance Scheme completed in 2021. Members from Miles Macadam, WSP, Shropshire Highways, Zero Carbon Shropshire and several Parish council members volunteered their morning to help sequester the remaining carbon emissions from the scheme. Through the use of our reduced carbon product Milepave™, the scheme had a 12% saving (approximately 50 tonnes CO₂e) over a conventional hot mix surface course. The remaining residual carbon was then sequestered through this Verified Carbon Standard Scheme.
The Alliance worked in partnership with Shropshire Council’s Flood Prevention Team to identify areas where trees could be used to slow surface water runoff from key catchment areas to prevent local flooding. This provides the benefit of carbon capture for the future and an additional ecological habitat, but also helps to “Slow the Flow” to protect properties from flooding in the local area.
The planting was a huge success, with so many volunteers to help out. Well done to everyone involved, and excellent to see the final step of the Carbon Neutral project completed!
