UK’s First Carbon Neutral Surfacing Scheme

Miles Macadam are very excited to announce this week as the start of the UK’s first Carbon Neutral Surfacing Scheme. We are working with Shropshire Council, WSP and Kier to provide a sustainable approach to resurfacing. Prior to becoming Carbon Neutral in July 2020, we formulated a ‘Carbon Reduction Strategy’ that enables us to calculate the carbon emissions of an individual surfacing project. The scheme will be using our specialist manufactured material, Milepave™. This is classified as a warm mix therefore generates less emissions than conventional surfacing materials.

Once we establish the carbon emissions, Shropshire will offset all emissions through their council run ‘Community Tree Scheme’ which involves planting British woodland trees. This will be mirrored by a similar scheme in Brazil where the equivalent carbon producing rainforest will be preserved.

Our key drive is to reduce the overall carbon footprint of any resurfacing works so this collaboration means we can enable Shropshire Council to measure their carbon footprint and aid in their approach to tackling the challenge of climate change.
